It’s a sleek little tool that looks good on your keychain, but in terms of actual usefulness it loses out to the Shard. The Brewzer does exactly what it says it will of course. The Wingman is only marginally more expensive than the Gerber Suspension but it feels like a much nicer multi tool. The Leatherman Wingman product picture The Gerber Center Drive took the slide out plier system in use on most of Gerber’s full sized multi tools and added a purpose built center axis bit driver. The goal was to create something capable of fully replacing pliers and screwdrivers in the handyman’s toolbox. Overall they did a pretty good job with it. The pliers work as well as any of their multi tools and the driver is actually a pretty nice innovation.

It’s marketed as a full-size but compact and lightweight professional-grade multi-tool. The entirety of the apparatuses inside the handle will naturally secure set up, limiting the number of wounds that would return from devices collapsing over onto your fingers. The pliers on the Truss are spring-loaded which isn’t that common for pliers from the 4 big manufacturers. My Gerber Center Drive pliers are also spring-loaded so I have some experience using spring-loaded and non-spring-loaded pliers. Being spring-loaded makes them easier to use one-handed. Again, it’s personal preference but I can take or leave this feature. If I think about my workshop pliers, they aren’t spring-loaded and I don’t have any trouble using them. Conclusion

Gerber Truss Review – Overview

Unlike most of the multitools I’ve used, the Truss is held together by Torx screws rather than pins or rivets. That got me thinking: if I could break this thing down like a firearm, I could keep it cleaner and in operational shape much longer. It was a good theory, but the Torx size was unusually small and my standard mechanic’s tool set didn’t have the right bit. The idea is still worth considering, but plan on buying specialized tools to do it. What we like about the Gerber Truss Gerber has replaceable wire cutters on other models like their highly acclaimed Center-Drive (reviewed here). And Leatherman has just recently upgraded their most popular model, the Wave, to the Wave+ and included replaceable wire cutters. The Truss is supposed to be a “professional grade” multi-tool so not having replaceable wire cutters is an oversight in my opinion.
