Mamalis A, Siegel D, Jagdeo J. Visible Red Light Emitting Diode Photobiomodulation for Skin Fibrosis: Key Molecular Pathways. Curr Dermatol Rep. 2016;5:121-128.

Light-emitting diode technology has been around since the 1960s. In the late 1980s, NASA’s research into growing plants in space was so promising that it led to the use of LEDs for stimulating astronaut health. This, in turn, sparked a huge body of research into LED light therapy for general human wellness.According to a 2018 review of research, many studies suggest promising results for the use of RLT, but it’s still controversial. Additional clinical research is needed to confirm its effectiveness. In the 1990s, light-emitting diode (LED) technology was used by scientists to help grow potatoes in space. The intense red LEDs helped promote photosynthesis. Supposedly, it also helped wounds on the scientists’ hands heal faster. Less energy cost: LED bulbs are extremely energy-efficient. They deliver the most lumens per watt, meaning that less energy is required for them to release superior light energy output over other types of bulbs.

The beauty of this type of treatment is that there are no significant side effects doucmented, yet a long and well studied list of applications.

The effectiveness of red light therapy has been proven by thousands of studies conducted by agencies such as NASA. It is a legitimate and widely used health intervention to improve your well-being, appearance and performance.

According to Rhonda Klein, M.D, a board-certified dermatologist in Westport, Connecticut, red light therapy boosts circulation, which brings “more oxygen and nutrients to your cells and tissues.” In addition, says Klein , red light stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, as well as fibroblasts, which are cells in connective tissue that produce collagen and other fibers. Huang A, Nguyen J, Ho D, Jagdeo J. Light Emitting Diode Phototherapy for Skin Aging. Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. 2020;19(4):359-364. Is red light therapy an appropriate treatment for my skin condition? Are other, more scientifically vetted approaches a better choice for my skin condition? See your healthcare provider to confirm a diagnosis and discuss appropriate treatment options. The gold standard of studies to determine if a product is effective is a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. This means that a certain number of people with the same range of characteristics (age, weight, race, gender, etc.) get either the study treatment or a placebo (fake or “sham” treatment) for treatment of the same condition. Some studies also include a comparison to another commonly used treatment. Results can then be compared between the emerging treatment versus no treatment (the placebo group) or versus a “current standard” treatment. They simply need to be mounted or placed inside your home sauna, and will be ready for you to enjoy in-sauna red light therapy treatment.

But, how does infrared heat work? Imagine a sunny day in the middle of winter. The air around you is cold, but the sun warms your face. That’s the sun’s infrared rays at work, warming your face as they penetrate your skin. You feel the warmth despite the cold ambient temperature of the air around you. Lee SY, et al. (2007). A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, and split-face clinical study on LED phototherapy for skin rejuvenation: Clinical, profilometric, histologic, ultrastructural, and biochemical evaluations and comparison of three different treatment settings. Larger red light panels will deliver more light energy to the skin. The more LEDs there are on a device, the greater the irradiated area, and the better your results. So, a larger panel with more red led light bulbs delivers more light to the treatment area. As the beams of light overlap somewhat, there will be greater absorption.

Editorial Sources and Fact-Checking

When you use LEDs, you can adjust each bulb to only emit a specific wavelength of light. You do this by changing the construction of the bulb at the source of the light: the built-in semiconductors. Each semiconductor lets off light based on a number of factors including the material used, amount of energy applied, built-in controls, and more. This is important because it allows you to control the light so it’s a specific color or wavelength the moment it’s created. Red light has been shown to improve the structure of water in cellular cytoplasm and other areas of the body, potentially providing a functional benefit to all cellular processes. The improved surface tension of cells may also improve ion exchange. Light can speed up the respiration process in cells and increase ATP and other mechanistic factors,” says Dr. Eells. “You stimulate cellular energy, and you stimulate the body’s ability to repair.” When it comes to the discovery of potential benefits of red light therapy, you can actually thank voyages to outer space.
