About this deal

Normally, that wouldn't bother me, but it feels very excessive with how many f-bombs and other such choices are littered through a single sentence, let alone the whole play.

Robins admits he’s a bit caught off-guard by the success of the show, especially because horror is a genre that rarely garners respect. In 2017 he created the podcast “Haunted,” followed by several others including “The Battlesea Poltergeist” with Toby Jones and his latest, “The Witch Farm,” with Joseph Fiennes. It largely justifies the confidence displayed in putting the word ‘ghost’ right up there in the title. The play is highly entertaining and I was drawn to the genre as being scared at the theatre is such a novel experience. Matthew is an amazing director who has worked with some of the coolest material theatre has to offer.

And I guess I wanted something more, I was hungry for something that actually sort of said something about something. I am huge fan of Danny Robins’ script, it’s such a fun and thrilling night at the theatre and I look forward to spooking audiences up and down the country… everyone enjoys to be a little scared sometimes, right? I saw the production starring Constance Wu and Anna Camp in Los Angeles, and the West End production starting Cheryl.Danny Robins’ storytelling is clever, witty and easily allows the audience to understand the characters, leading the narrative creatively to a climax no-one saw coming. Lots of questions are asked within the story, some are explained but others are left to linger in the mind for you to ponder. Sam reveals that his work trip was to a rural island where he lost his phone, and was unable to contact Jenny leaving her and daughter Phoebe alone in the house. Danny Robins is a man of average height with black hair, a red coat and wolfish expression, he is exactly the type of person who would tell a story like this.

On 10 June 2021, it was announced that the play would premiere at the Noël Coward Theatre in London's West End from 3 August running until 16 October 2021.

Robins – the creator of hit podcast The Battersea Poltergeist – is well-versed in what makes scary stories scary, and uses that to brilliant effect here. The book has a note which says it went to press before rehearsals were finished so it may differ slightly, but I remember it to be the same except possibly in two small scenes. Norwich Theatre Royal, Playhouse and Stage Two are part of Norwich Theatre, the operating name of Theatre Royal (Norwich) Trust Limited.
